ABOUT US
Improving Access to Care, One Project at a Time
OUR STORY
Boundless Medical was founded by two Victoria-based family physicians, Dr. Stuart Bax and Dr. Cal Shapiro, out of a shared concern for patients falling through the cracks of the healthcare system. Working in a busy walk-in clinic, we often saw people in difficult situations not because their problems were new, but because they had been unable to access timely preventive care and had nowhere else to turn.
When the COVID-19 pandemic began, centralized solutions were slow to emerge. Rather than wait, we invested in our own PCR machines and built a physician-led COVID testing service focused on access, efficiency, and clinical oversight.
As that work came to an end, we began asking a broader question: where else were patients being left behind?
That question led us to cancer screening, an important part of preventive care that remains difficult to access for many people, particularly those without a regular primary care provider. Through CanScreen, we worked to help bridge that gap and to test whether a more centralized, virtual model could improve access to screening and follow-up.
Boundless Medical remains small by design. We take on focused projects where we believe we can be useful, while continuing to care for our own family practice patients and support local nursing homes. By working with community partners, health system groups, and other providers, we try to address practical gaps in care in a way that is manageable, responsive, and grounded in day-to-day clinical experience.
We do not claim to have large-scale answers to complex system problems. But we do believe there is value in identifying specific gaps, building practical responses, and showing what may be possible when care is designed around the needs of patients.
CanScreen
At Boundless Medical, we focus on practical, physician-led solutions to gaps in care. Through CanScreen, we worked to improve access to cancer screening across British Columbia, particularly for people without a regular primary care provider or others facing barriers to care.
The goal was to offer a clear, accessible virtual pathway to screening and follow-up support.
